Hey friend,
Ever thought about what a safe space means to you? And is it something you create for yourself?
I ask because I recognize that for many, especially those who've faced adversity or a tough upbringing, creating personal space can be a challenge.
It’s a big deal, as I see it, because everyone deserves personal space and, more importantly, safety.
We all deserve personal space. We all deserve safety.
And so I would like to highlight why we deserve to have personal space.
Creating a personal space of safety is a way to resource yourself. It’s a timeout from the chaos, a chance to reflect, honor boundaries, and just breathe. Whether you need it physically or emotionally, personal space is key to healthy living.
And it shouldn’t matter if you need space for health reasons, dislike physical touch, or just want a solo moment, you deserve your personal space, and that deserves respect. Period.
Why it matters?
Mental Health Boost: Personal space aids focus and mental well-being.
Stress Relief: Stepping away from the daily noise lets you reconnect with yourself, reducing stress and anxiety. It's your ticket to relaxation.
Emotional Clarity: Your safe space helps recharge emotions and tackle tough conversations with a clear mind.
Communication Upgrade: Giving yourself space to think minimizes the risk of lashing out. It's like a buffer zone that makes communication smoother.
⚠️On the flip side ⚠️
Not having a personal safe space puts your mental and physical health at risk. It can spike stress, anxiety, and impact your overall well-being.
Now, let's get practical. ☝🏽
So how do you create a physical safe space?
Here are four steps I’ve come up with that work for me & may work for you:
1. Find Your Space:
Pick a spot that's private and minimizes interruptions – it could be a room, your car, or even a cozy garden spot.
2. Own it:
Personalize this space to make it truly yours. Add some type of decor that brings meaning to you like a plant, rock, a notebook, blanket, shrine set up, or a unique smell.
3. Set Boundaries:
Clearly define what your safe space means, both physically and mentally. Let others know when you're in your zone, and ask for their understanding.
4. Connect to calm:
In your safe space, try mindfulness meditation, deep breathing, or relaxation exercises. These can help keep you centered, release tension, and induce calm.
Creating a safe space, be it physical or mental, is an act of self-love. It's your retreat to recharge, find peace, and maintain sanity in a sometimes overwhelming world. So, give yourself permission to create that space, set those boundaries, disconnect, and engage in practices that promote healing. Your well-being deserves it. 🌿💖
